Rimo Kangri

Rimo Kangri is one of the principal peaks of the Rimo Muztagh, a remote mountain group forming part of the eastern Karakoram. Standing at 7,385 metres (24,229 feet) above sea level, the mountain overlooks the massive Rimo Glacier, one of the most important glacier systems in northern Ladakh.

The region is characterized by enormous glaciers, rugged granite peaks, steep snow ridges and permanently frozen alpine terrain. Because of its isolated location near India's northern border, Rimo Kangri has remained one of the least visited high mountains in the Himalayas.

Its untouched wilderness, technical climbing routes, and dramatic scenery make Rimo Kangri a legendary objective for serious mountaineers.

The Rimo peaks have been known to explorers and survey teams since the late nineteenth century, but the remoteness of the region delayed mountaineering activity for many years.

The first successful ascent of Rimo I, the highest summit of the Rimo group, was achieved in 1988 by an Indo-Japanese expedition. The expedition successfully climbed one of the most remote and technically demanding mountains in the eastern Karakoram.

Following increased security restrictions in the border region, mountaineering activity became extremely limited. Today, Rimo Kangri remains one of India's most exclusive and rarely visited expedition peaks.

Rimo Kangri is located in the Rimo Muztagh of the eastern Karakoram Mountains in Ladakh, India. The mountain rises above the Rimo Glacier, close to the historic Karakoram Pass and India's northern frontier.

The nearest major town is Leh, which serves as the primary gateway for travel across Ladakh. However, the mountain itself lies within a highly restricted border region where civilian access is not permitted.

Rimo Kangri stands in one of the most spectacular glaciated regions of the Indian Himalayas. The surrounding landscape consists of enormous glaciers, towering snow-covered summits, steep ridges, and deep alpine valleys.
