Trip Introduction

The Markha Valley Trek is one of Ladakh’s most iconic journeys, offering a perfect mix of raw mountain beauty, remote village life, and rich cultural experiences. This trail takes you deep into the heart of the region, where every day brings a different landscape—from dramatic canyons and river crossings to wide open valleys surrounded by towering peaks.

Set within the stunning Hemis National Park, the trek follows the Markha River as it winds through small traditional villages, green patches of farmland, and centuries-old monasteries. Along the way, you’ll witness a side of Ladakh that still moves at its own pace—where locals live simply, prayer flags flutter in the wind, and the mountains feel both vast and personal at the same time.

One of the most rewarding moments of the trek is crossing Kongmaru La Pass (5,260 m), where you are greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding ranges. It’s a challenging climb, but one that truly captures the spirit of high-altitude adventure.

At Altitude Adventure, we’ve carefully designed this itinerary with proper acclimatisation in Leh, allowing your body to adjust comfortably before heading into the mountains. Our focus is not just on completing the trek, but on making sure you experience it safely, at a steady pace, and with enough time to truly take it all in.

This trek is ideal for those who are looking for more than just a physical challenge—it’s for travelers who want to connect with the landscape, experience local culture, and explore the hidden beauty of Ladakh in an authentic way.

Trip Note :

The Markha Valley Trek takes place in a high-altitude region of Ladakh, where weather conditions, terrain, and local factors can change quickly. While we plan our treks during the most suitable seasons, travel to and from Leh may occasionally be affected by weather-related delays or operational disruptions.

In the event of flight delays, cancellations, or any unforeseen itinerary changes beyond our control, additional expenses such as accommodation, meals, or transportation will need to be borne by the participant. Altitude Adventure will provide full assistance in arranging alternatives wherever possible.

As this trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, proper acclimatisation is essential. Our itinerary is carefully designed to allow gradual altitude gain however, participants should be aware of the risks associated with high-altitude trekking, including Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It is important to follow the guidance of the trek leader at all times.

Mountain conditions, river crossings, and trail accessibility may vary depending on weather and seasonal factors. For safety reasons, the trek leader may modify the itinerary, adjust walking distances, change campsites, or alter the route if required. All decisions made by the trek leader in the interest of safety and group well-being are final.

Participants should be in good physical condition and prepared for long walking days on uneven terrain, including steep ascents, descents, and occasional river crossings. Flexibility, patience, and a positive mindset are key to enjoying the experience.

We recommend keeping buffer days in your travel plan before and after the trek. It is also strongly advised to have travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, emergency evacuation, and medical assistance.

Altitude Adventure is committed to providing a safe, well-organized, and authentic trekking experience, ensuring that every participant enjoys the beauty of Ladakh responsibly and with confidence.

Acclimatisation & Precautions

Acclimatisation is essential and life-saving for any journey to Ladakh. Located in the high Himalayas, Ladakh sits at extreme altitudes where oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level. Leh, the main entry point for most travellers, is situated at approximately 3,600 meters (11,500 ft), making proper acclimatisation crucial before moving to higher regions.

Without adequate acclimatisation, travellers may experience Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), with symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. In severe cases, AMS can develop into life-threatening conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).

To ensure safety, the Leh District Administration enforces a mandatory 48-hour rest period for all visitors arriving by air. This allows your body to gradually adjust to the altitude and reduces the risk of altitude-related illness. Skipping this crucial phase can significantly impact your overall experience and health during the expedition.

Important Acclimatisation Guidelines

  • Take complete rest on your first day in Leh and avoid any physical exertion.
  • Drink at least 3–4 litres of water daily to stay well hydrated.
  • Avoid climbing stairslong walks, or any strenuous activity during the initial days.
  • Refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption for at least the first 48 hours.
  • Consume light, easily digestible meals and maintain a high-carbohydrate diet.
  • Preventive medication such as Diamox (Acetazolamide) may help, but should only be taken after consulting a doctor.
  • Immediately inform your guidehotel staff, or travel companion if you feel unwell or notice any symptoms.

Proper acclimatisation ensures a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience in Ladakh, allowing you to fully focus on the mountains, landscapes, and unique cultural experiences that the region has to offer.
